DWIght Eschliman: EXCERPTS FROM THE ONE DAY PROJECT

Dwight Eschliman’s latest project, ONE DAY, catalogues time.
Each day consists of 24 hours. Each hour, 60 minutes. Each minute, 60 seconds. For each execution, the artist photographs one static point in the sky every second for 24 consecutive hours. Each of these 86,400 photographs then becomes a pixel in a larger composition.
The finished pieces are produced in sizes from 18 to 72 inches and include one-hour and 24-hour time spans. The project currently includes over 100 editioned pieces from four continents.
The ONE DAY project has appeared in the American Photography AP40 contest and the Communication Arts 2024 Interactive Annual. It will appear in American Photography AP42 later this year. Works from the collection contribute to private and institutional collections, notably the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Eschliman’s depiction of each second of a day at once abstracts and reinterprets it to offer a new perspective on place and the passage of time.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: DWIGHT ESCHLIMAN
Dwight Eschliman has been working out of his studio in San Francisco’s SOMA neighborhood for the last twenty years. Eschliman’s work is rooted in his fascination with the familiar. He dissects and explores ordinary objects in extraordinary detail. His passion for close examination has earned him a reputation as a master at capturing beauty hidden within the mundane.
His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, WIRED and in campaigns for Absolut, Apple, Audi, and other companies whose names do not begin with the letter “A.”
After deconstructing the Twinkie, he spent a year learning about food science and published INGREDIENTS: an art book on food additives. He has now turned his attention to documenting fish and examining time and place for his award-winning ONE DAY Project.
