About the workshop: Explore the fine art of silk painting with René Shoemaker, a France-based artist who will guide us as we examine historical and contemporary silk paintings and develop new skills. Our creative experience begins by planning our projects and investigating color while integrating our individual design aesthetic with the natural qualities of silk and dye. We spend our first day creating color charts for personal reference, becoming comfortable with the silk painting technique. We will discuss design options, transfer our design onto silk, then familiarize ourselves with resist and various methods of applying dye. We will finally discuss setting, or “fixing,” the dye after the artwork is complete. Each workshop participant will create several paintings, starting with 22” and 11” hemmed silk squares that can be worn as scarves or displayed as wall hangings. While we will cover the serti technique of resist line silk painting, there will also be room for much experimentation. Discover more of René Shoemaker's art at reneshoemaker.com.

René will lead this workshop at Michelle Thomas Fine Art Gallery + Studio, 40 29th St, San Francisco 94110.
